Nevada Fish Reports

Truckee River Report

by RENO FLY FISHING OUTFITTERS
Flows are up some from recent storms moving through the area. There is also some ice on the edges and even some floating ice chunks in the river as well. To fish the Truckee right now you have to really get out there and find some open water and some wade able areas. The Canyon Section in California is probably your best bet and East

Paid for Fishing Derby Update

by MIKE MOGLER
Lake Topaz was buzzing with the anglers catching their limits for the “paid for fishing derby” annual event on opening day. The derby starts off the fishing season at Topaz which on the first day of January and ends Saturday, April 17 with a drawing for prizes. Dave Rossman manager of the Topaz General Store reports 189-2lb fished

Good Ice Fishing

by ELKO FLY SHOP
South Fork Reservoir has 5-6 inches of good ice with a couple of inches of snow on top. Fishing has been good for 15-18" fish. Fish in shallower water with most of today's fish caught in water that was 6 feet or shallower. One angler caught 4 nice trout within 6 feet of shore!

Good Times at Opener

by GAIL DUBLANC
Angler Gail DuBlanc reported in on the opening weekend at Topaz Lake. My family fished all three days opening weekend. January 1, was down right cold with a temp of 16 degrees. My son (Brian) and I fished together that day. We trolled until 1pm and caught 17 fish. On average 2 pounders. Biggest two were 2.7 lbs & 2.6 lbs. The next day my

Pyramid Lake New Year Update

by TAHOE FLY FISHING STAFF
Pyramid Lake has been producing some good action for larger fish but not yet the numbers game that we will see in the Spring. Chironomids under an indicator are doing best with stripping a close second! The fish are now in the shallows as the storms mix it up, look for windy days or rain to turn the bite on. We carry a good assortment

Cold and Good!

by MATT KOLES
It is cold out at Pyramid Lake too. Winter in the high desert is un-forgiving. Be prepared and dress in layers and you will have fun. Nymphing big copper johns under the bobber, or stripping in buggers and beetles are all working. Sometimes first and last light is the best in winter if there’s no action on the lake, wind, chop, cloud cover. If you

COLD!

by MATT KOLES
After a very cold weekend we have warmed a bit. Not much, but enough to melt some of the anchor ice/ shelf ice, along the Truckee River. Kinda feel sorry for anyone that tried to fish the river this last weekend, just way to cold. Things have warmed a bit and afternoon sunshine should thaw things out and get some fish moving around. December and

Truckee River Flows Up

by MATT KOLES
We are at 111% of average snowpack in the Northern Sierra’s. More is on the way tonight. A very big departure from the last 4 years. The Truckee River came up again to almost 500 cfs here in the Hirsh, way higher down lower, and has mellowed out to about 300 today here. It should be slowly lowering until the next high snow/ rain event. Funny

Lake Trout is on the Menu

by JOHN SHEARER
The fishing has been tough. If the winds aren't blowing and the marina is not frozen over we have been getting some nice Lake Trout. Nothing big to note. Stay tuned.

River is Rising

by MATT KOLES
I can’t believe we have snow in the forecast for the next 7 days in a row! My anxiety level is slowly dropping and the river is slowly rising. Cold the last few days in Lake Tahoe/ Truckee, like arctic cold again. We’ve warmed back up and the fishing on the Truckee River is actually very good for mid-December. When I say very good, I mean you

Watch out for the Wind

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Still fishing well here but be careful for those windy fall days if you are utilizing a boat! This lake is notorious for capsizing boats! For those throwing hardware from the shore we have stock in the Sierra Spoons in the best colors and for those trolling the lake we have new flatfish patterns from Hendrix Outdoors, Lyman's, and Murphy's Vibrator Spoons.

Tough to Access

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Current flows are low and with a lot of ice and slush along most the river any fishing will be tough. If you do find some open water(fish will be in the deeper pools with some sort of flow) you'll be throwing midges and Baetis patterns. With snow coming in on Friday and continuing off and on until Thursday of next week conditions will

Transitioning into Winter Mode

by MATT KOLES
Pyramid Lake is transitioning into it’s winter time mode too. The big packs of fish are not cruising like they do in the fall and spring, but the big fish will come in usually at some point in the day. That is usually the last few hours of the day. You may have a great wind and waves coming in on you and you may

Looking Promising

by MATT KOLES
We are experiencing descent snows in Tahoe for the first time in 3 years. Decent snows, not huge for Tahoe standards. After todays storm we will be right around 80% of average annual snowfall in most parts of the Northern Sierra’s. The Truckee River watershed is looking good. Last weeks storm came in very warm and we got a lot of rain before it turned to

Unsafe

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
No recent reports, but expect unsafe ice.

Zunino Update

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Construction on the reservoir is complete and the low pool area even held some water after the rains earlier in the summer. Pray for snow next winter to fill it and if this happens then NDOW will stock it with trout, largemouth bass and bluegill in the spring of 2016. It all depends on Mother Nature.

Rudy Update

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Expect Harrison Pass to be closed due to snow and anglers should plan on accessing the Refuge through Secret Pass. Last week, the collection ditch was about 80% ice covered, but due to the warm weather it is now about 50% ice free. However, expect it to start icing up next week with the projected cold weather. As a general rule anglers can almost always

Ready Soon for Ice Fishing

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
As of Thursday, December 10, the lake is 100% ice covered with a few inches of unsafe ice. It was snowing on Thursday, so there will be a layer of insulating snow covering the ice slowing down the growth of the ice. It probably won’t be safe for a couple of weeks yet. As a general rule of thumb, the ice doesn’t get safe at

No Recent Report

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
No recent report on road conditions but this part of the county received a lot of moisture, so expect 4WD conditions. It is probably very muddy in the afternoons when it warms up. Expect ice conditions here to mirror those at South Fork.

Road to Angel Lake is Closed

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The road to Angel Lake is closed. There will be no further reports until late next spring or early summer depending upon snow conditions.

Almost Ready

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
As of Thursday, December 10, South Fork was about 90% covered with unsafe ice. There were several hundred yards of open water shoreline in the northeast corner by the dam parking lot. Jet Ski Beach also had open water along the shore. In some areas there was about 10 feet of open water before you hit ice, while in others it was as far as

Should be good by Christmas for Ice Fishing

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
There is a thin sheet of unsafe ice here. Like Wild Horse, this ice is generally not safe until after Christmas. Single digit overnight lows and daytime highs below freezing are forecast for the next week. This should start to add ice thickness and if the weather doesn’t warm up, it may be safe right around Christmas.
