Fish Reports

Many of the urban ponds in the western region have received a fall stocking over the last two weeks. The summer vegetation covering many of the ponds is finally starting to back off making for much easier access. Topaz has been good for trout from shore. Trout fishing should continue to get better as the cold sets in. Worms off the bottom have been productive near deep drop-offs for bait fisherman. Spin fisherman have been using heavy spoons and kastmasters to get to deeper water. 

Low flows are making for tough fishing recently on the East Walker. Currently flows are low, roughly 20cfs.  Fish are definitely concentrated in the larger pools. Fly fisherman using small nymphs under larger dries (dry/dropper) are picking up the occasional good trout. Fish are spooky so be sure to watch your shadows and keep your approach to the water quiet.

Bilk has received nearly four thousand trout this fall averaging ten inches. Fishing has been good with bait and fair with spinners and flies. Worms off the bottom or salmon eggs under a bobber on light leaders have both been effective. 

Fishing has been slow for walleye, crappie, channel catfish and the occasional wiper.

The cold temperatures have slowed fishing at Rye Patch with a few good reports recently for smallmouth. This summer was one of the best for smallmouth in a long time. Although it has slowed significantly, some smallmouth are still being reported in deeper water off points and around structure. As of December 3, the Bruneau River was flowing at 14.6 cfs.

Surface water temperatures have dropped into the mid to high 30’s and the lake was about 70% covered in very unsafe ice on Tuesday, November 30.  Bass fishing is done for the year. The road to Angel Lake is closed for the winter and the lake is ice covered and there will be no more fishing reports until late spring or early summer depending upon snowfall this winter.

The water levels continue to drop at Cave Lake in an anticipation of renovation efforts on the dam in 2022.  NDOW conducted a fish salvage this and moved some very nice brown trout ranging in size from eight to 25 inches into Comins Lake.  Cave Lake is closed to fishing due to shorelines that are very soft and dangerous due to the complete saturation of

With colder water temperatures due to some afternoon snow melt and cooler air temperatures, expect stream fishing to be slow to fair. As of November 26, Cleve Creek is flowing at 4.3 cfs.

Cold Creek Reservoir was salvaged a few weeks ago so that water control structure could be fixed to prevent leaking. When the control structure is fixed, the reservoir will be filled and NDOW will begin rebuilding the fishery in 2022. 

Comins Lake was about 60% ice covered as of Thursday, December 2.  There was plenty of open water along the north and west shorelines for fishing, but trout fishing was just fair due to the cold water temperatures.  Anglers can expect to catch Rainbow Trout in the 16-to-17-inch range but shouldn’t be surprised when they hook into fish that are over 20 inches.  Water temperatures

The dry year that has impacted much of the west certainly impacted Illipah Reservoir, with water capacity sitting at about 50% and ice forming on the lake.  There should still be some open water this weekend for shore fishing, but expect that to end next week with overnight lows well below freezing and daytime highs at or just above freezing.   Anglers will do well
