Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The lake is frozen. Can’t get a boat out and can’t fish from the shoreline. Wind and rain may break it up but the ice is fairly thick. (775) 266-3550

Decent winter style fishing has returned to the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
The negative-negative temps look like a thing of the past, at least for now, and fishing on the Truckee River has been good. Good is relative, hooking a few fish can be good, sometimes you hook more, but winter timey fish are usually pretty big. If you missed the winter clinics, there's always next year, but look out for my Spring Fling clinics sometime in

The Truckee River cold front has moved on

by MATT KOLES
Good to get back in the saddle again. Warmth has returned to the region, at least relative warmth, and the river is putting out some fish. We still have ice in the guides, but at least you can fish. Yesterday and today have been good. The class today was awesome. Hopefully it's a sign for the rest of 2013 on the Truckee River. I'll put

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The Blockhouse, north nets and shotdog are getting the most fish. Boaters have stayed off because of cold, windy condtions. Water temperature is 42 degrees so fish are on the sluggish side. (775) 476-0400

Fishing has been out of the question with -22 degree weather on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
We've been in a deep freeze, Artic style. Not good if you're a fly angler in Truckee. Plumbers though have probably been killing it, racking in lots of overtime with all the broken pipes around town. This is the kind of cold where your car may or may not start, and if you run out of wood, or propane, you're basically screwed. Fishing, well that's

Shore anglers continue to score well, especially at Blockhouse and Wino. Flies with black, orange, yellow or red seem to do well. Green Flatfish and Camouflage spoons work for trollers. (775) 476-0400

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Shore anglers get limits of trout to 2 pounds but access is tough because there is six to eight inches of snow on the ground. Snow, ice and low water make it tough to launch boats. (775) 266-3550

The last couple of weeks have been about as cold as it can get in the Truckee area

by MATT KOLES
We're thawing out at least for now, but another cold snap is on the way. Highs for Truckee this weekend won't make into the 20's. What's that mean for the Truckee River? Well, it means ice in the guides, anchor ice, and the river probably resembling a slush puppy. The Nevada side won't fare much better with Reno barely hitting 30. We are having a

The Cave Rock launching ramp is clear and 4x4s with chains get boats in and out. Mackinaw fishing is very good. Not many big fish but plenty of three to six pound macks are being caught. CalNeva Point and Dollar Point are good spots. Toplining also has been good. Macks are stuffed with shrimp and juvenile kokanee. Guide Gene St. Denis on Dec. 29 caught

It's cold on the Truckee River right now but it's supposed to warm up this weekend

by MATT KOLES
The word is cold. We just haven't managed to get out of this cold snap. I really don't think we've made it out of the 20's for nearly two weeks here in the Hirsch. -10 here at my house this morning. Usually it would be warmer down on the Nevada side, but it's been cold there too. Good news is that warming is suppose

If you had any doubts, let me just say that Winter has come to the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Winter has reared it's ugly head. Thank God we haven't been skunked. Some photos from the last few days on the Truckee River.

The Truckee got lots of snow with the last storm

by MATT KOLES
Man, we got a shit ton of snow this last week here in Truckee. 3-4 feet in the Hirsch. We sit at 5,550 feet on the East side of Truckee, so that is a lot of snow for us. On top they got over 6-7 feet. That's really great news for next years water situation. If you come up and fish on the Cali side-good

Trolling for mackinaw off the Tahoe City shelf has been productive for guide Gene St. Denis. On Wednesday, St. Denis’ clients landed six macks between two and seven pounds and lost another eight. Depths ranged between 150 to 300 feet. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Water temperature has fallen to 47 degrees. Fishing has slowed due to poor weather and few fishermen. Trout are closer to shore but it’s still a time-in endeavor. Big fish have been coming from Blockhouse. Spider Point and Warrior also are good. (775) 476-0400

A Midge is the key to good fishing on the Truckee right now

by MATT KOLES
Winter is upon us. Snow is the forecast for the next few weeks and it is cold out. Hirschdale shouldn't venture far out of the 30's for daytime highs at least for the next month, or so. At night we will be well below zero at times. Whatever, fish still need to eat. If you need to wet a line, remember, start later in the

Mack bite is quite good. Clients of Gene St. Denis are catching macks ranging three to eight pounds with a good showing of 10 pound plus fish. Best method is trolling dodgers and minnows at depths ranging from 120 to 260 feet. Toplining also can get macks, browns and rainbows. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552, Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

Fishing remains very good for both shore and boat anglers. North Nets has been a recent hot spot. Wooly Buggers or jigs have been top producer. (775) 476-0400

Winter Clinics January 19th & 20th

by MATT KOLES
This is your chance to hang out and get schooled up by yours truly on some winter fishing tactics. You will see the set-up I am using right now; rods, lines, leaders, and how I approach the river in the winter. The main points we will cover are type of water to fish, flies, and rig setup. Classes will be a bit smaller than my

Situation averted

by MATT KOLES
Flood stage never happened. The monsoons came and went. If we'd had more snow up top and it had rained like it did, things would be different. I know a lot of water pushed up through town, but for Hirschdale and below, 2000 cfs is nothing. That could be typical spring flow for us. Right now the Truckee River is dropping. There's about 3

Guide Gene St. Denis reports good to excellent fishing for mackinaw in 120 to 200 feet of water off Sugar Pine Point, Dollar Point and CalNeva. Macks in the six to 12 pound range are caught each day. Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552

Two 20 pounders were caught in two days, both from shore. Both with wooly buggers. Who’s next? (775) 476-0400

The Winter stroms have affected the flows of the Truckee but the river adjusts well

by MATT KOLES
It's going to get wet. We have some strong Pacific storms that are hitting Nor Cal starting today into the weekend. Snow levels will be high which means rain for anything under around 7500-8500 feet. With all this rain the Truckee River should be pumping by this weekend and probably every other river in Nor Cal. Good news is that the Truckee clears fairly
