Fish Reports

The bass bite was tougher for most of the past week as the fish moved deeper. Stripers are hitting live shad and cut anchovies the most, but three-inch silver swimbaits are a solid backup option. Kastmasters and Jumpin’ Minnows also can be productive for subsurface fish. Anglers are seeing some crappie action with jigs in the Overton Arm.

Since last week’s storm pushed through, we have seen the flows on the Truckee stabilize, sitting at just under 300 at Glenshire Bridge and at a bit over 500 at the Farad gauge. Ice growth has been extremely slow to nearly nonexistent at South Fork Reservoir this year. As of 2/14/25, State Park staff reported large areas of open water with very thin ice present along the majority of the shoreline. These conditions are NOT safe for ice fishing. 

Fishing will slow considerably at Washoe and Little Washoe with the winter and ice. Look for stocking to begin again this spring.

Marilyn’s Pond is closed due to ice. Fishing will pickup again when the ice comes off this spring.

Fishing has been slow at the ponds. Catfish were stocked during the summer and should start showing up over the next spring and summer. Crawlers off the bottom here can produce a multitude of cold and warm water species including those recently stocked catfish. Look for trout stocking to occur as temps allow this spring.

Fishing has been fair at squaw. Ice and snow can limit access at Squaw near the dam. Shore anglers near the inlet and warm spring are catching primarily trout on crawlers and power bait off the bottom. Fishing will improve as we move into spring.

Fishing has been slow at Wilson with limited access due to ice and snow. Stocking will resume in the spring when conditions allow.

The Marina has been fishing fair this winter. Bait fishing with worms off the bottom will find trout and bass. Power bait and other dough baits will also produce fish just off the ledge near the fishing dock. Spin fisherman willing to put in the time are doing well working jigs and small spinners. Stocking will pickup in late March-early April.

The Carson is down to typical winter levels and fishing has been slow. Small spinners seem to be the best bet for the remining planters around broken dam. Fly fisherman are finding a few trout on small streamers and small nymphs on light tippets. Some surface activity has been reported early an late in the day

Ice has been on and off the pond this winter and fishing should be good for a few holdover trout with the nice weather forecasted. Salmon eggs or small worms under a bobber and power worms or power bait off the bottom is always effective at Baily. Fly fishing with small nymphs should be effective when there are no fish on the surface.

Fishing has been good to fair at Topaz as we start to stock the lake for the season. Anglers from shore are using powerbait and crawlers off the bottom.

Fishing has been slow at Mitch Pond. It should pickup again with some warmer weather. Look for stocking to pickup again in late March-April when temperatures allow.

For now, fishing remains fair at Seeman. Bait under a bobber is about as good as it gets. Fishing will improve considerably with spring sticking.

No recent reports from Spooner Lake due to limited/no access during the winter months. Fishing should be great when there is access again this spring.

Hinkson Slough is back! – After two years of repairs and rehabilitation, Hinkson Slough is healthy and fishing very well.  The rainbow trout that were stocked over the fall and winter are incredibly healthy and ranged in size from twelve to nineteen inches. Spin fisherman using small spinners did very well in the late morning through the afternoon from both shore and boats. Fly fisherman

Flows have returned to normal after a wet few weeks. The Reno gauge is currently hovering just above 500cfs in Reno. With nice weather in the forecast, flows should be somewhat stable in the coming days. Water is not dirty, nor is it crystal clear. It is holding a greenish blue tint through the Nevada side. The "steelhead green" is helpful for anglers as it
