Things have changed quite a bit on the Truckee over the last week. The colder weather has slowed the runoff, the flows have dropped and the water has cleared up nicely to a “steelhead green” along most sections of the river. Despite afternoon winds, fishing has been good in recent days. At Haymeadow, anglers have been reeling in rainbow trout with dark-colored Woolly Buggers. Nymphing patterns, like red or black zebra midges, are also good options for fly fishing. Crappie action should pick up soon at Cold Springs. Bright colored tubes are great options for crappie and trout in late spring.

Cold Creek Reservoir is ice free and filling up nicely. The main reservoir is filling up and backing into the middle pond.  Water temperatures are in the mid-30s.   Anglers can expect to catch 8-to-10-inch Rainbow Trout and 8-to-10-inch Tiger Trout.

Comins Lake is ~75% covered with ice. Ice conditions should be considered unsafe, and anglers are advised not to access iced up areas of the lake. Anglers will be able to fish off the dam, northern and western shorelines of the north lake area.  The south lake float tube launch is opening up and the southern 1/3 of Comins Lake is open to fishing.  Anglers

Illipah Reservoir is 100% open water and ~75% of capacity. Angling should be decent, however, the water is murky with recent snowpack runoff.  Anglers can expect to catch 8-to-10-inch Rainbow Trout.  A variety of night crawlers, PowerBait, and spinners should produce trout for anglers.  The road into Illipah Reservoir does have some minor ruts but otherwise access is good.

Fishing remains limited, but the reservoir is open for day use. High water flows are creating murky water conditions. Rainbow trout will be the most common catch. Try PowerBait, jigs and spinners.

Below the dam, anglers are finding slow going for striped bass. Most of the fish being reported are coming in under 5 pounds and taking swimbaits and anchovies. Shore anglers fishing along the developed areas are finding the evening hours to be most productive. Trout action is slowing with the increase temperature. PowerBait, Night Crawlers and floating mice tails are generally good bait options.

Rainbow trout are still bending fishing rods following the last fish plant at the local ponds, but anglers can expect the bite to slow down as temperatures grow warmer. For now, the fish are hitting soft plastics during the evening hours. Anglers are reportedly catching channel catfish using finesse techniques.

Anglers have seen an increase in black bass action over the last week. Reports are that smallmouth and largemouth bass are taking topwater baits and soft plastics in red and green in Cottonwood Basin. Kayakers are using swimbaits to catch stripers along the cove edges. Near Katherine Landing, anglers have been using swim jigs to get bites from largemouth bass during the evening hours.
