NDOW Eastern Fishing Report

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Last week we talked about ice thickness and what is safe and what is not.  Obviously, there are anglers in the area who don’t read this column, like to live dangerously, and they were ice fishing this past week on Wildhorse. As stated last week, the most dangerous times to be on the ice is early in the ice season (now) or late in the ice

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Sunny afternoons are slowing down the thickening of ice across the reservoir. Anglers are fishing from shore where ice is thinnest. Anglers are using night crawlers and PowerBait, a couple feet below a bobber. Overnight freezing temperatures cause ice up along the edges in the morning, but nothing to note. The launch ramp is open, but the fishing pier is still removed. For

North American Beaver

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
What's in your backyard? The North American beaver is a large aquatic rodent equipped with strong teeth and jaws to break down trees and build dams. They can weigh up to 60 pounds and are approximately 3 ½ feet long from head to tail. Beavers are herbivores and eat leaves, aquatic plants, and woody stems – much of the same material they use to build

NDOW Eastern: With Colder Weather Come Colder Water

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
With the colder weather comes colder water.  Makes sense, doesn’t it?  Some area waters are seeing some ice, especially at higher elevations.  The beaver ponds in Lamoille Canyon are iced over and Lamoille and Island Lakes are completely ice covered with a couple of feet of snow on the ground. All the high mountain lakes are frozen over now. Surface water temperatures at Wildhorse have dropped

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Trout action has been very good. Rainbow and tiger trout are taking a variety of spinners and spoons. Bait anglers have been doing well from the shoreline using a chunk of night crawler and PowerBait or combined with a mini marshmallow. The fishing pier is still inaccessible, and the boat launch is closed. Freezing temperatures overnight are making for icy conditions early in

Wildlife Health and Chronic Wasting Disease

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
In this week's Nevada Wild, Ashley Sanchez and Aaron Keller introduce Nevada Department of Wildlife Veterinarian Nate LaHue. LaHue explains his role at NDOW, and the various projects he works on to monitor the health of Nevada's wildlife. Currently, LaHue and NDOW biologists are busy working to prevent Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal disease to animals in the deer family, from entering the state. While it

NDOW Eastern Fishing Report

It looks like we might be getting some much needed precipitation this weekend as a cold front moves through bringing colder temperatures and even possibly some snow overnight on Saturday.  We are looking at a 30 degree drop in daytime highs and that combined with precipitation will bring surface water temperatures down considerably. Expect the fishing to slow a bit on Saturday and Sunday as the

NDOW Southern Fishing Report

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Trout fishing has been good following recent NDOW fish plants. Anglers are catching both rainbow and tiger trout. The fish are taking PowerBait, spinners, and a variety of small spoons. The fishing dock and ramp will remain inaccessible until the reservoir receives additional water, and that is dependent on precipitation. Moisture is expected this weekend, so travel prepared for the possibilities. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR Rainbow
