Western Nevada Fish Reports

Week 6,  1st place Gary Nelson with a 3.8 lb 20 inch rainbow.  2nd  place Jeff Gould with a 2.4 lb 18 inch rainbow.  Both from Wellington NV. A nice fish caught by Brendan LaFountain on February 23. We were fishing with Hans Moxley of Hooked Up Guide Service (530) 546-2221 out of Carnelian Bay on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Hans worked hard and put us on limits for 4 fisherman before noon despite the cold weather. Can’t wait to go again! Report sent in by Tim Murphy.

We have been getting a lot of reports of fishermen bypassing the Creel Station. Please help us to monitor the fishery by reporting all fishing activity, either in person or by voluntary creel forms.

Snowing again. Ha ha ha. All you can do is just laugh and be thankful for all the precip at this point. Big rain and snows this week again. If you have a second home up here, best make sure you get your roofs cleared, mainly the ice damns, and clear out your propane tank. Big wet snows on top of all this snow is a recipe

Fly fisherman Donald Parker, from Dayton, NV was out on the water with his buddy Matt Provencal on Sunday, February 24th  at Pyramid Lake in Sutcliffe, Nevada.  Dunny locked on these Cutthroats with his Helios 3 rod.

What a great day to be fishing. Had a couple first timers on and the fish wanted to show them a fun time!

We had a great day out on Pyramid with the crew from Tahoe Resources.  Most of the group came in from Canada and had their first experience with fly fishing.  We had a few 10 pounders to the net!

Yep. cold morning, -2 Fishing was indeed spot on, just had to deal with some lines icing up but these guys handled it just fine.    

Good day on the lake! Had Harold, Mark and Mike from So Cal who fought the cold and got some nice fish up to 9lbs. Great job guys!

Still digging out. Tons of snow. Mammoth and Squaw Valley have set February snowfall records. That’s impressive considering we’re just a little halfway through the month. Wow. Honestly, I haven’t seen this much snow here in Hirschdale. Even more than ’17 I’ve literally just been blowing snow, or shoveling it since the last report. Some big boys and girls have been coming to shore this week and the winter storms have been bringing more fish closer the beach. Anglers are seeing quite a few fish in the 3-6lb mark with some standout 19lbers in the mix. Give us a call if you are interested in fishing this area as we have dates available for the remainder of the month.

Things are starting to heat up on Pyramid Lake. Recent storms have brought the fish in close and while air temps have been cold water temps near the shore have been in the high 30’s and low 40’s each afternoon. Anglers have been mixing success with stripping Boobies and fishing midge and balanced leeches under indcators. While searching depths with a floating line the RIO Midge Tip

The fish keep coming!  Lots of good sized fish being caught!  Both on the strip and the indo.  Love the storms for keeping the fish moving.

February fishing on Pyramid Lake has been similar to December and January, with quality in size being at the forefront rather than numbers; although when a storm blows in we do see the numbers jump up. It’s been cold so bundle up!

On some of these dreary wet days it may not seem like a good fishing season, but if you take a longer term perspective this is close to a perfect winter. We depend on winter to provide the water the fish need to swim in. It is the Sierra snowpack that stores the water for the coming year. The winter of 2018-19 is shaping up to

ATTENTION ANGLERS: All fishing ponds at Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area are covered with ice for the opening this weekend. There is not much, if any, open water. The ice is thin and dangerous. Instead, we recommend you head to Topaz Lake (photographed below). We stocked it with 6,520 rainbow trout last week, and 4,365 rainbows this week! Enjoy!
