Have some fun on the Truckee River this spring

by MATT KOLES
Hard to believe today is the first day of Spring. We're having a little glitch in system with some rain and snow this morning, but after two weeks of warm weather we need it. It would be nice to get a couple more snow storms before summer, but the way its looking, that's iffy. Good news is that the fishing will be good all Spring.

The fishing has been outstanding this week with the warm weather on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
All is can say is the fishing has been outstanding this week with the warm weather on the Truckee River. This is how it goes: On the East side of the Truckee River through the Conservancy and such, we are talking blue wing olives of epic proportions. Through Reno, and on the West side, skwalas, some march browns, and blue wings. In California, we are

Browns are starting to be more available for those toplining in 45 feet of water. Mackinaw bite is steady. Bigger fish are 80 to 100 feet deep. Smaller fish can be caught in 40 feet. Troll early, jig later.  Mike Nielsen (530) 721-0593

This is getting a lot of pressure. Dark stoneflies and BWO baetis during the day work well. The Glenshire stretch has pockets that can be fished with dries. Water is bigger below. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

Blue Wing hatches have been gnarly on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Man, the blue wing hatches have been gnarly the last few days down on the lower Truckee River in Nevada. Funny though, if its blue bird, fish will stay down, and cloudy they'll be up on top. This week will be sunny and warm. I'm sure we'll also see descent hatches of march browns and skwalas throughout the entire system. Bugs galore I guess. Feels

Snow is back in the forecast for the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
This early spring weather that we've been having here in the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno area on the Truckee River has been great, but the fear of another lousy snow year has been on the back of my mind. Thankfully snow is in the forecast for next week. Lets hope it dumps, but not into June which can be the case around here. Right now though the

Mack fishing brings limits or near limits with dodgers and minnows. Bite has been best late in the morning because of the full moon. Guide Gene St. Denis and son, Eric, caught 22 and 26 pound macks this week. Both big fish came close to closing time at the ramp.  Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Sport Fishing (530) 544-6552

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report, February 24th 2013

by MATT KOLES
Well, it doesn't look like we're getting any storms in the distant future. Except for the shot we got this week, it's been since December that we have had significant amounts of snow. Scary for water thirsty states such as California, and Nevada. The fishing is however is very good right now on the Truckee River and we can only hope the storm doors will

Before Tuesday’s snow fishing had been good. Boaters were getting limits of trout in the 13 inch class with flashers/nightcrawlers or black/gold Rapalas in the top 10 feet of water. Nothing large. Shore anglers get just shy of limits with nightcrawlers or Power Bait. (775) 266-3550

The BWO's are out on the Truckee River and the fish are heathy and active

by MATT KOLES
Hard to believe it's already the middle of February and we haven't had a significant storm in over six weeks. I guess I shouldn't get to worried. We had a dry spell like this in 2010 and then look what happened. Next week we will get a good cold storm, we need it. Despite the lack of storms the Truckee River is still up, above
