Western Nevada Fish Reports

The lake level keeps coming up a little each day

by DOUG BUSEY
The lake level keeps coming up a little each day. For those that love to do a little bass fishing. Get your bass down there. The smallmouth and largemouth are on their beds starting to spawn. Small hair jigs in an orange pattern have been most productive. The trout are starting to become active in the early mornings in the shallows or on the drop

Winter is over on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
Well, Winter is over on the Truckee River. I'm sure we'll still get some weather this Spring, but man, this is crazy. 70's about everyday in Truckee. Needless to say the fishing is pretty darn good.  Skwalla's, early caddis, march browns, blue wings. Everything is in the drift and nymphing should get you some. Might get lucky and get some on top too.  Spring is usually streamer time,

The rainbows on the Truckee have mostly entered spawn-mode at this point

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The rainbows on the Truckee have mostly entered spawn-mode at this point and if spotted these fish should be avoided to allow a successful spawn of our wild Truckee trout. Caution should also be taken when wading across any shallow gravels bars, as these redds can be hard to spot at times. With that said, you can definitely guess what junk fly would be good

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
As with everything else this year, we have seen the fish at Pyramid begin their spawn a bit earlier this year, and this week we have seen fish paired up and creating redds right along the lake shore. Despite this, there are still fish hanging in deeper water feeding and these are the fish you would be targeting if you headed out here right now.

The pond is open and has been stoked once this season

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The pond is open and has been stoked once this season. Pink floating power worms fished off the bottom are a favorite at Davis. Small dry flies can be fun fishing early and late in the day.

Stocking has begun at Baily and fishing has been good

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Stocking has begun at Baily and fishing has been good. Rainbow trout are caught primarily on salmon eggs and power bait on the bottom or under a bobber. Small wet flies and lures are also very effective on the pond.

Flows are perfect at the moment, but that can change very quickly

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Flows are perfect at the moment, but that can change very quickly. Flows will likely bounce around in the next few weeks with runoff into Bridgeport. Fly fisherman using large streamers have reported some healthy rainbows and browns this winter. There has been a few Skwala stoneflies hatching but no real prolific hatches have been reported. Spinners, rapalas, and spoons have been productive while flows

Spring has sprung on the Truckee River...Early

by MATT KOLES
High of 68 today in Truckee. This March might go down as our warmest March on record.  We are way ahead of schedule fishing wise. It feels like mid-late April. I've seen caddis, small stoneflies, and of course skwalla stoneflies. March Brown mayflies should come off very shortly.  So it's a smorgasbord of bugs to nymph with. We've basically had our runoff. The river is still up,

The lake is in full spring mode already

by PYRAMID LAKE FLY FISHING
The lake is in full spring mode already. The weather has basically turned into spring a month early. Unless we get another storm system rolling through later in March it looks like sunblock and wet wading!!! Seriously it is time to get out there. If you like the spring bite and the lake its time, go, go, go…. Fish are cruising the shallows all around the

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

by THE FLY SHOP
Fishing conditions:  Good Report: Pyramid continues to fish well. With the storms behind us, fishing won't be stellar, but where else can you catch a 20 lb. cutthroat standing on a ladder? If you are going, your Moo Midge or Balanced Leech could be what they eat. Basically, that is the gam right now, keep a dark Balanced Leech or Chrinomid Bomber under an indicator and in

East Walker Flows Are At 115 CFS

by KENS SPORTING GOODS STAFF
The California side of the EW is closed for Winter, just the Nevada side is open now. The flows on the East have been fluctuating quite a bit with the warmer, then colder weather we've been having, today the flows are at 115 cfs. Based on the few reports I've had from down there it sounds like the fish have been pretty tight lipped lately

The fishing at Pyramid continues to be boom or bust right now

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The fishing at Pyramid continues to be boom or bust right now. Overcast skies, wind, rain, snow and a dropping barometric pressure are key factors for having a successful day out here, so plan accordingly. We are in the season of midge fishing and stripping streamers, with streamers being best during low light days and midges under the indicator fished the rest of the day. This

Truckee River Fishing Report

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Since the last big storm event we have seen flows stabilize, but it did take longer than we had initially thought due to warm overnight temperatures prolonging melt. With air temps dipping this week, we should see flows continue to trend downwards and water clarity improve. As of today, the river is still running high and there is a tint to it, but this is

The mackinaw fishing has been very good

by DOUG BUSEY
The mackinaw fishing has been very good. I spoke with a long time friend Sean Luscombe from Carson City Nv. He has been fishing with a friend and doing very well for good sized mackinaws. Best areas have been the Tahoe shelf, Rubicon Bay or the area between Camp Richardson and Emerald Bay. Best attractant was a dodger and a live minnow. Some have had

Topaz Lake Fishing Report

by DOUG BUSEY
I fished the lake this week. I have to tell you, the lake is within a few feet of being full capacity. The water is almost at the top of the Douglas County Parks department launch ramp. The lake was still and calm. I trolled for 4 1/2 hrs for trout and got only a couple hits. I threw every pattern and size variation I

Things are starting to change up on the EW

by KENS SPORTING GOODS STAFF
The California side of the EW is closed for Winter, just the Nevada side is open now. With the much warmer weather we've been getting things are starting to change up on the EW. The flows have been increasing do to some early run-off and are sitting at about 251 cfs today, depending on the upcoming weather this could change either up or down from day

This storm cycle has really kicked up the bite at Pyramid Lake

by RENO FLY SHOP
This storm cycle has really kicked up the bite at Pyramid Lake with lots of snow, wind, and cloud cover. Fish are keying largely on midge patterns along the sharp dropoff zones as well as the shallower beaches on the right day. When the wind is stirring up the lake, waves have been pretty big- resulting in fish feeding tight to the bank or dropoff.  In

Fishing on the Truckee River has been great in between storms

by RENO FLY SHOP
Fishing on the Truckee River has been great in between storms. With the mild weather leading up to this week, fish were feeding actively on Blue Winged Olives throughout the Nevada side of the river. Water temperatures were hovering around 40 degrees on the lower river which helps quite a bit. It has since cooled so watch things to dip and then improve next week

The bite at Pyramid has been great this week

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The bite at Pyramid has been great this week. The fishing is good throughout the day, and all presentations have been working. We would recommend choosing your method of fishing based on the beach you end up at, or vice versa. If fishing a rocky bottom beach, you would want to avoid using sinking line and streamers and would be best focusing on fishing midges

The fish will continue to hold in slow, deep runs

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The fishing on the Truckee slowed down quite a bit this week when compared to the previous month of dry, warm days. When looking at the conditions, the flows have yet to change much and water temps have dropped but not plummeted. When theorizing why the bite slows down so drastically despite any major shift in the tangible variables, we often just simplify it by

We've started to get a few reports from the Nevada side lately

by KENS SPORTING GOODS STAFF
The California side of the EW is closed for Winter, just the Nevada side is open now. We've started to get a few reports from the Nevada side lately, some days have been pretty good while other days have not been so good. On the good days it sounds like they're eating small midge patterns like zebra midges, pheasant tails, hare's ears, perdigons, copper johns,
