Ice fishing continues to be slow so far this winter

The ice on the north end of Comins Lake varies between 4.5″ to 8″.  Ice in the narrows and north end of the south lake is between 9″ and 12″.  The south end of the south lake averaged 7″-8″ in areas sampled. Ice at Illipah Reservoir ranges from 7″ to 9″ throughout the lake. On 2/15 the road going into the reservoir was in good condition and was passable in two-wheel drive. Anglers are still experiencing good catch rates with rainbow trout averaging 9″ to 10″. Anglers should do well using nightcrawlers, PowerBait, small jigs and spoons.

Jakes Creek Reservoir is around 90 percent ice covered, but conditions are NOT suitable for ice fishing

Jakes Creek Reservoir is ~90% ice covered, but conditions are NOT suitable for ice fishing. Ice is only measuring a couple of inches thick, with an 18-inch ring of open water around the northern shoreline. With projected weather conditions and temperatures, it is expected that these ice conditions will continue to degrade.

South Fork Reservoir Report

As of 02/01/24 South Fork has around 80% open water.  Shoreline anglers are having luck fishing on the southwest side of the lake, catching rainbow trout in the 15″-18” range, with a few brown trout in the mix. A worm 5′ under a bobber is the go-to for spin anglers, while fly anglers continue to have success with leech patterns.

Recent ice checks revealed ice conditions are still widely variable around Comins Lake. The majority of the north lake has 5.5 inches of ice on it.  The middle of the lake has 10 to 11 inches of ice, while the south end has 7 inches of ice in areas sampled.  With the warmer temps, the ice along the perimeter of the lake has become soft.

Recent snow storms could change road conditions, so please plan accordingly.               After measuring from 4 different locations off of our boat ramp, we have lost .5” of the good clear ice. We are at 6.5” currently and 7” of slush on top. Sean and I will begin measuring twice weekly, since we will be getting warmer weather in the coming weeks. As always, please exercise caution when out on the reservoir. We will take another reading

Jakes Creek Reservoir has 7 inches of ice with 1-2 inches of snow on that.  Fishing should be fair to good for trout up to 16 inches.  The road going in is snow covered with a few open patches of dirt and easily passible.

Jiggs Reservoir has 3-4 inches of ice

Jiggs Reservoir has 3-4 inches of ice with some variability across the reservoir. Fishing should be fair to good for trout and perhaps a couple of bluegill once the ice becomes thicker. NDOW recommends anglers stay off ice measuring less than 4 inches.

We have been receiving some pretty nasty winter weather this past week which seems to be doing good things for the reservoir. Measurement that we took today are showing 7” of clear ice and a top layer of about 5” of slush/cloudy ice. Remember, these measurements were taken around the boat ramp and are not intended to be interpreted as thickness for the whole reservoir.
