As of December 6th, Wild Horse State Recreation Area reported a minimum of approximately 6.5″ of ice when entering from the state boat ramp, which passes the recommended 4″ minimum for safe walking or small groups ice fishing. We have some lake news the striper bite has been picking up. Megan Willson was on their boat and while trolling in the telephone cove area just out side of Kathern Landing  was able to land a nice size striper. Total anglers reported= 301 Total angler hours reported=2032 Average hours spent fishing per angler was 7 and spending about 1.5 hours per LCT caught There was more shore anglers than boaters this month. One reported "other" and four non reporting angling methods. Boat anglers were the most successful in total LCT caught per fishing trip.

The past few weeks have we have seen some downright ferocious monster cutthroat ripping line off reels in search of the middle of the lake. As these large trout roam the ledges looking for bait fish, they continue to pack on the pounds with a protein rich diet. What does this mean for the fish's energy levels? After measuring for ice thinkness, we are currently at a minimum of approximately 6.5” of ice on Wild Horse reservoir when entering from the Wild Horse SRA boat ramp. With this thickness, it should be safe to begin ice fishing! As always, please exercise caution when out fishing on the ice. We do not recommend driving across or on it.
