Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

by RENO FLY SHOP
The storms that passed through our region throughout the first two weeks of December improved fishing at Pyramid Lake. On many days, a combination of rain, snow and wind moved into the area and improved the bite along the shoreline. With colder water temperatures and storms typical of early winter, the fish have moved into shallower water.  Both stripping and indicator setups were effective through the

Major snow for the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
2-3 feet here in Hirschdale, and we’re only about 5,500 feet. Big snows up top. Man, we needed that. Flows bumped up a bit too. 80 closed, no power. When it snows in Tahoe, it’s no joke. Cold though. Been a cold start to our winter. Coldest in 30 years. Single digits this week, and high’s just in the low 30’s. Reno ain’t much warmer. The good

As of Thursday, 5 inches of ice along the southwest shores

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The dock is out of the water and the main boat ramp is closed for the season. As of Thursday, December 10, South Fork State Recreation Area reported 5″ of ice along the southwest shores. Early season winter ice fishing can be extremely dangerous, please exercise caution. Open water remains from the main boat ramp to the dam. Anglers are having luck with PowerBait, worms

Comins Lake is nearly 100 percent ice covered

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
Comins Lake is nearly 100% ice covered with still a few areas of weak ice. Most areas that were sampled had 4.5 to 5.5 inches of solid ice, but anglers should be aware that a recent ice break up has caused some areas of the south lake and north lake to be unsafe, 2 inches or less.  Early winter ice fishing is some of the

The reservoir is 100 percent ice covered

by NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE
The reservoir is 100% ice covered.  In areas sampled, the ice thickness was at a maximum of 4 to 5 inches.  The early winter ice fishing season can be extremely dangerous, please exercise caution.  Anglers should expect to catch 8-to-12-inch Rainbow Trout and the occasional Brown Trout.  Anglers will do well with a variety of night crawlers, PowerBait, and jigs.

Ice fishing is officially up and running

by SOUTH FORK STATE REC. AREA
Ice fishing is officially up and running at South Fork. We've got an average of 5" of ice along the Southwest Shores side of the lake (along Coyote Cove and Jetski Beach). If ice fishing isn't your thing, we also have open water accessible by shore from the main boat ramp toward the dam on the east side. Remember, ice is NEVER 100% safe. Always use

Pyramid Lake continues to fish steadily

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
Pyramid Lake continues to fish steadily, but we still have the best fishing ahead of us as the deep winter months are the shore angler’s best shots at larger fish in the 20 pound class. The bite seems to remain spread out throughout the day, with no clear window on better fishing, so keep those flies in the water and be ready to strike back.

The Truckee had a significant drop in flows last week

by TROUT CREEK OUTFITTERS
The Truckee had a significant drop in flows last week, due to the state turning off the spigot out of Boca dam, which has been the main source of water throughout the fall. This has made the average flow along the entire river system at just over 100 CFS, which is definitely lower than we like to see it. With how low Boca was getting

Lots of options at Pyramid Lake

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Lots of options here. For boat anglers, the east shore is fishig the best. Boat anglers should troll in 80 feet of water with apex lures, lyman lures, and rapalas. There is also a great jig bite here. The bite is right at the 100 foot water column and as the day progresses, anglers will notice the bite is more around 40-50 feet. The east

Current conditions make for very challenging fishing

by MOUNTAIN HARDWARE & SPORTS
Water Conditions The Truckee River is flowing around 130 CFS throughout the whole system. Current conditions make for very challenging fishing and very cold wading for anglers. Stealth is the name of the game at these flows. Wear plenty of layers as you will be fishing in temperatures ranging from 10 to 40 degrees. Anglers are seeing some hatches of blue winged olives and midges in

Cold Front Equals Bent Rods

by PYRAMID FLY CO.
The past few weeks have we have seen some downright ferocious monster cutthroat ripping line off reels in search of the middle of the lake. As these large trout roam the ledges looking for bait fish, they continue to pack on the pounds with a protein rich diet. What does this mean for the fish's energy levels? More strength and power than they know what
