Nevada Fish Reports

The Carson was high all summer, finally coming down to rest over the last month. Fish are happy and flows are down to good fall levels. Spin fisherman using larger spinner and spoons have caught some good fish recently. Fly fisherman using small mayfly nymphs and midge pupa have been doing well under the indicator. Flows are finally down to winter levels on the East Walker. We’ve seen 250-300 cfs all summer long making for some challenging fishing. A few caddis may be out in the evening with a few sporadic midge and mayfly hatching during the day. Fish seem to be holding deep at the moment with very few risers seen during the day. Trout fishing has picked back up again with the cooler overnight temps. The lake is currently ice free. Fishing for bass has slowed considerably. Majority of the surface activity is now limited to trout in the evenings. Small spinners continue to produce trout all day in deeper water. Bait fishing with dough bait and worms will catch trout most of the day.

Fishing is slow for walleye, crappie, wiper and catfish. A few walleye are being caught slowly trolling minnow imitations or worm harnesses. Trolling faster with rapala minnow imitations is a good method for walleye as well. For crappie use bright colored jigs in the flooded vegetation. Fishing was fair this summer and will continue to improve as warmwater gamefish populations continue to rebound. Spin Fisherman are finding that Rapala minnow imitations are working well in addition to larger brightly colored jigs. Fly Fisherman are picking up an occasional walleye or bass on chartreuse woolly buggers or clouser minnows near the dam.

As a result of declining water levels, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in Walker Lake has increased dramatically to the point that the lake can no longer support its native fish and wildlife populations. Jakes Creek is still covered with approximately eight inches of ice but no fishing report.  Generally fishing through the ice is good for 10 to 14-inch trout using a jig tipped with a worm.

This impoundment is covered in unsafe ice with the aerators running to prevent a winter fish kill.  There will be no fishing report until spring when it becomes ice free.

Water levels in the collection ditch are low and clear and fishing for trout is fair to good depending upon the day.  Some parts of the ditch are icing up especially the north end though there is plenty of open water for fishing. Anglers report catching mostly 10 to 12 inch fish in many areas, though a few very nice fish have been caught.  Stormy,

The road to Wilson is 4WD and there has been no recent report on ice.  However, conditions here are often similar to South Fork, so expect unsafe ice. 

Angel Lake is completely frozen over and the road is closed for the winter, so there will be no fishing reports until late next spring or early next summer depending upon winter weather.

South Fork was about 80% covered in unsafe ice on Wednesday, January 8, and the ice was gray and porous, with little or no shore access to open water. Access to the lake is closed as the water level has been lowered due to safety issues with the dam and in preparation for work on the dam next summer.

Ice here is averaging about eight inches with thicker ice is at the south end and some anglers have been catching nice trout through the ice. Anglers also report catching eight to 10-inch bass through the ice as well. Fishing has been good for 14 to 18-inch trout using jigs tipped with a worm.

No recent report on ice condition, but expect six to eight inches of ice here, though make sure to drill a test hole before venturing upon it.  Fishing is generally good for 12 to 16-inch trout through the ice using black or dark colored jigs tipped with a piece of worm.   

The Truckee River is in great shape! The water is cold, slow, and clear, but the fish are actively feeding later in the afternoons.
