??As of??Monday, Feb. 24, all reservoirs on the management area are ice free. Anglers have been catching trout in the 10 - to 12-inch range off the dam at??Haymeadow and Cold Springs with spinners, spoons, and PowerBait. The only ice on the lake is in the center, so boaters need to use caution, but the shoreline and dock are free of ice. Action has been really good using PowerBait. Coloration doesn't seem to matter. Night crawlers have also produced good action.

With the unseasonably warm weather, smallmouth and largemouth bass are exhibiting spawning behavior. Nesting activity is apparent in the shallows and all along the shoreline. The sometimes elusive striped bass may be more receptive during the new moon, which begins March 1. Fishing under a light or with a submersible light has generally produced good results.

Catch rates at the local ponds have varied this past week. Anglers have been doing well at the Boulder City and Sunset Park ponds using PowerBait in various colors. The specific color hasn't seemed to matter to the fish. Action at the Floyd Lamb Park and Lorenzi Park ponds has been a little slower, but the anglers that are catching have been using PowerBait.

Reports have been light, but those coming in are that the fish are hanging deep. With the new moon on March 1, anglers may see a slight change in fish behavior. Fishing under a light or with a submersible light during a new moon is an effective way of catching stripers. The biggest trout of the season, a 25.25 pound cutthroat was landed Wednesday by Peter Thompson of Reno who landed the fish from shore at Rawhide with a wooly bugger. A 23.8 pounder was caught Tuesday at the nets by Brad Bugica, who was using a black jig. President’s Day Derby was a success. Anglers checked in 43 fish and 24 were larger than 10

The ice is now only five to six inches thick on most of the reservoir, but is extremely thin with some open water around the edges. Most anglers are accessing the ice using the dock, but Ben Johnson, park supervisor asks that everyone use extreme caution. Those anglers fishing through the ice are having good success using sparkle PowerBait or night crawlers.

Veterans Memorial Park, Sunset Park and Hafen Park ponds are expected to be stocked with rainbow trout this week. Anglers will find good success using light equipment with smaller hooks and less weight. Power Eggs in yellow or orange is a good choice for bait, or try small spinning lures such as Kastmasters, Super Dupers, or Rooster Tails.
