Western Nevada Fish Reports

The Truckee has been pumping out some some big 'bows

by MATT KOLES
Being a guide you have your good days, and your bad days. Hopefully, your good days far out number the bad days. Yesterday, was one of those good days. Since about late summer of last year, the Truckee River has been pumping out some big bows, bigger than normal. I knew someone that fished with me was going to catch a 10 pounder, or close

Truckee River Fishing Report 1/12/12

by MATT KOLES
A change could be on the way according to Mark Finan, our local weather guy. Let's hope. It's the middle of January and still no snow in Tahoe, crazy. Same old story on the Truckee, solid winter fishing. Midges, some more midges, baetis, worms, and stones. The streamer fishing ain't to shabby either. Looks like the end of next week could bring some weather here

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The quest for big fish continues to slog along. Just four cutts larger than 10 pounds have been caught since the opener in Oct. Those were caught in the southern end of the lake. Bite has been slow over the past week. (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Access to the river is wide open. Fishing isn’t a sure thing, but it’s worthwhile for an afternoon of catch-and-release. Bite is best from mid-day until 3 or 4 p.m. (530) 587-4844

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Trout fishing has been quite good. Trout seem to be fatter, than longer. Trolling in the south end and on the east side has been providing best action. Biggest fish since the Jan. 1 opener is three pounds. Shore fishing has been on the slow side. (775) 266-3550

Fly Fishing on the Truckee River is off to a really good start

by MATT KOLES
2012 is starting off as a good one. The Truckee River is in purrrfect shape, couldn't be any better, flows wise, for this time of year. Cold nights, mild days, I'm on bankers hours, and loving it. Some client Trout's from the last few day's.

Can you imagine midging at this time of year on the Truckee

by MATT KOLES
Still super solid winter time fishing on the Truckee River. Good reports up and down the river. I'm starting to see more fish on top daily. Midges are the name of the game. Shortly, we'll start getting the big midge clusters, they ball up, and the fish start coming up for 'em. Super fun. With this mild ass weather everything will happen early this year,

Down Time for "Gilligan"

by MATT KOLES
I haven't been out on the water for about a week. Needed a break. Some down time. I'll be back at it this week though. I did get out today for a bit. Everything was still the same as I left it, trout in their usual winter spots. My Skipper stone did the trick today in a sz#10, golden. Here's a lo-fi recording from a

Truckee River Fishing Report 1/4/12

by MATT KOLES
Well, it was near 60 today in Truckee, and even warmer down in Nevada. For it being early January, the fishing is pretty good. The entire river is pumping out fish. The water master has the gates open at Tahoe. I have no idea why. I'd be saving that shit for Summer, being how dry it is, but that has made the flows come up

The fishing report at Pyramid Lake (NV) has been pretty bad. One to 2 fish days are common right now

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
We have gone through a 2 to 3 year lull concerning numbers of fish at Pyramid. Some of this may be due to the decision to re-stock the lake with much smaller fish a few years back. The lake has been producing bigger fish over the past few years but numbers are down. Hopefully this will not be a long term issue at Pyramid Lake. The

The Truckee River has been in really good shape for fishing over the past 8 months or so.

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Flows have been very consistent and remain in great shape. There was a time a couple of weeks ago that the cold air temps made shoreline wading kinda tough due to ice forming in the slower moving water. Over the past week this has not been an issue at all. Normally by now the California side of the river is hard to get to due

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The bite remains on the slow side but larger fish are being caught. A 13 pound cutthroat and a 12 pounder were caught over the weekend at the south end of the lake. (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fish Report

River is at 300 cfs through town and 400 cfs below Boca, great flows. But it’s a tough bite. Large stoneflies and small copper Johns are good options. (530) 587-4844

Topaz Lodge Fishing Opener 2012

by CARILYN ALBIN
We had a great day started weighing in tagged fish at about 10:00AM. We were busy all day weighing fish and having a great time. We ended up weighing in 58 Topaz Lodge Tagged fish. We also had 38 over 2 lbs weighed in. It seemed like most anglers were having a great time. The weather was great. A

The 2011 Season on the Truckee River

by MATT KOLES
What a crazy year on the Truckee River. Water was the issue, and we had a ton of it. I never thought I'd be catching fish at 2-3 k on the Truckee, but I had no choice. I still managed to have a great season, met a lot of great people, and learned a little more about fly fishing myself. Hopefully, I see some new

Some Mild Ass Weather

by MATT KOLES
What a change from last year, at this time a year ago, we already had a good snow-pack, it was cold, and we were heading into one of the biggest Winter's on record. This year is the exact opposite, hell, I don't even have a fire going tonight. The last two days have been in the high 50's in Truckee. Like I've said, you can

Whiskey Wine and Trouts

by MATT KOLES
Ice in the guides, whiskey, wine and trouts. We put the boat in for Larry's b-day yesterday. His buddy Jay, Olympian, and Sierraville native joined us. Larry actually mangaged to catch a fish. Jay stuck a pig in some serious frog water. It was cold, and them fish have moved back into some bayou water. Jay claims we drank a vintage Italian wine from

Truckee River Fishing Report 12/22/11

by MATT KOLES
Winter fishing continues to be good on the Nevada side of the Truckee River. Warm days, stable flows, equals solid winter fishing. We are in the process of the third driest December on record in the Truckee-Tahoe area. Despite the lack of precip, the river is still almost twice as high as average for this time of year, but we need snow to put

Pyramid Lake, NV Fish Report

Trout bite continues to be slow. Shore fishing was especially slow. Only productive spot was Hell’s Kitchen where trollers picked a few cutthroat. (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fish Report

Main Truckee is fishing well on the Nevada side when the sun is on the water. Overcast days produce best. Use small baetis, blue wing olives. (530) 587-4844
