Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Flows are good throughout the open section. Glenshire is a good stretch. Recent snow hinders some access but it is predicted to be gone by the weekend. Fishing has been steady, but not spectacular. Small nymphs or midges are the ticket. There is little to zero surface activity. (530) 587-4844

Rainbow Action on the Nevada side of the Truckee with "Gilligan" and Keith Chow

by MATT KOLES
The bugs are out, East of Reno that is. Big fat 'bows, solid sz#16's, and lots of them. I haven't seen any fish on top, but that will change here shortly. Nymphing is still the way to go. Midge up on them in the morning, stone-zebra midge type setup, and change over to some kind of baetis nymph, sz#18 by mid-morning. As the hatch progresses,

Fishing continues to be very difficult. Large fish are rare. Warrior Point is a good starting spot. (775) 476-0400

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Trollers are out-producing shore anglers. Rapalas in perch, brown or rainbow pulled through the south end of the lake get fish averaging a pound. Fish are between five to seven deep and then between 15 and 20 feet. Trout are shallower early. (775) 266-3550

Fishing at Pyramid Lake (NV) is slower than usual

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The water temperature around the shoreline is 44 degrees. This is really close to the wintertime low. Cold nights in the Reno area have off-set the warmer days. The fishing report is still really slow. The best report we have heard from 1 angler is 8 fish. Most days it is 1 or 2 fish. Boaters are reporting fish in 20-60 feet of water. Large

Best days to fish the Truckee is from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The flows on the Truckee are perfect. Access is not an issue right now and the fishing has been pretty good. Fish are holding in slower deeper pools. Baetis and Midges have been hatching sporadically and there have also been a few Stonefly sightings. The best days for bugs are the cloudy ones. The best day to fish is whenever you can get out there.

A 12 pounder was caught from a boat at Indian Head. Overall, boaters continue to out-produce shore anglers. Shore anglers have been getting more larger fish than in the past. According to creel census, it takes five hours to get a fish from shore, two hours from shore. (775) 476-0400

Another good day fishing with a Beer on the Truckee with "Gilligan"

by MATT KOLES
One beer can change the outlook on everything. After refusing a beer with brother's Bryan and Jesse this morning, I finally gave into the peer pressure. Then of course, Truckee local, Bryan in the main photo, landed his biggest rainbow to date on the Truckee River. Good times with good dudes. Yesterday, Michael from S.F. caught his first fish on a fly rod. Two firsts,

After a storm the Truckee can fish really well, the past 2 days not so much

by MATT KOLES
Usually, when the river gets a good flush, then comes back down, which it did this last week, the fishing is "on". However, I think the Trouts got a little freaked out, and unstable flows this week on the Truckee River didn't help. Bob and his boy Ken came back up and fished with me, and though we didn't exactly crush it, we put some

Limits of macks in the one to six pound range are the norm. Occasionally larger macks are landed. Dollar Point, CalNeva Point and Sugar Pine Point have been the go-to spots for guide Gene St. Denis. Blue Ribbon Fishing (530) 544-6552

Cutthroat are beginning to move into shallower water and shore anglers have a better shot at quality fishing. Shoreline anglers are averaging 3.5 hours per fish while it took trollers 3.9 hours per fish. The week before boaters did twice as good as shore anglers. Highlight of the week was a 19 pound cutt caught with a white jig tossed from the shore near the

Glenshire is the most accessible but snow shoes may be needed. The stretch along Hirschdale Drive is usually the first to lose the snow. (530) 587-4844

A tournament held last weekend with a group from Auburn resulted . Shawn Lanz had a 3.7 pound rainbow from shore to win the 51-angler contest. Limits were common, despite a range of tough weather conditions. Most of the fish were in the one- to two-pound range. (775) 266-3550

Fishing on the Truckee after the storm, January 24, 2012 Report

by MATT KOLES
We finally have some snow in the hills. We got about 6" inches here in the Hirsch, but a good dumping above 7,500 feet. The Truckee River came up to about 1,500 cubes during the storms, but she's come back down, and this week will be good with the mild weather forecasted. Access is always an issue when it snow's on the Cali side. Up

Topaz Lake was slow last week, will the storm that came thru change that?

by CARILYN ALBIN
Good Afternoon to all This last week was slow again. The lake is like a ghost town. There are hardly any fisherman on the lake all week. And the winners are Shawn Lenz in the photo above from Auburn CA with 3.9 lbs and 21  ? inches for first place and Johnny DeRossett in photo #1 with 2.10lbs and 19  ? inches.

Trout are moving slower on the Truckee 'cause of the cold, but they will react to Baetis and Midge

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
Stream flows on the Truckee have been very consistent. Lack of snow has limited any run-off on warm days. The fishing has been fairly good for January and we have even seen some fish rising to Baetis and Midges on the surface on warmer afternoons. The water is really clear and easy to wade right now. It is important to take a little more stealthy

The coming storm could blow out the Truckee for a few days so check the flows

by MATT KOLES
We finally have the jet stream lined up, and storm's on the way for Tahoe. It looks like all of Nor Cal is going to get pounded into next week. The storm's are on the warm side, which will bring a lot of moisture, but also rain, which could blow out the Truckee River for a few days. Check the USGS flows if you do

Trout bite has gotten a bit better. Big fish of the year is a 12.14 pounder caught the first week of January. Bitter cold has kept people away. (775) 476-0400

Truckee River Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
The middle section from Glenshire to Hirschdale is good because of water releases from Tahoe. Best conditions are overcasts skies in the middle of the day. There are baetis hatches now. Green stoneflies are expected soon. (530) 587-4844

Topaz Lake Fish Report

by NOR CAL FISH REPORTS
Full moon killed the bite but trout fishing improved after that. Trollers pulling Rapalas, flashers or nightcrawlers through the middle of the lake 10 feet deep are getting limits. Shoreline anglers get two or three fish per day with rainbow Power Bait. Best action comes from the southwest bank. Trout are averaging 14 to 16 inches. (775) 266-3550

Fly Fishing at Pyramid Lake (NV) has been really slow

by TRUCKEE RIVER OUTFITTERS
The weather or lack thereof over the past month or so has put Pyramid to sleep. The surface water temperature is down to around 44 degrees and there are some huge thermo-clines of warmer more oxygenated water 30 feet to 80 feet down. This has made fishing for the fly anglers really slow. It finally looks as though we are going to get some weather

Topaz Lake results for Week 2 & Week 3, January 17, 2012

by CARILYN ALBIN
Wow what a crazy derby so far not many fish coming in to be weighed. I did not do a report last week because there wasn't much to report on. I hear a lot of complaints from our customers. I have been told that anglers are catching fish just not sizeable ones. I have also been told that because there was
